Name: Yao Wang
Age: 22
Nationality: Chinese
Birthday: October 10
Occupation: College student [Medicine] and part time super sleuth
Upper, Middle, or Lower Class?: Lower
Attitude Towards Bots?: Yao finds bots unnatural and tragic, and tries to avoid them as much as possible. One of his side projects while attending college is to find out if it’s possible, at all, to restore a bot’s former humanity. If not, he believes they’re all better off dead than forced to exist in blind servitude. He hasn’t yet found out the fate of his youngest sibling.
Appearance: Yao’s a fairly short young man, standing at 5’5 with a slim frame and nicely toned arms and legs. He has very androgynous features, and was often mistaken for a girl when growing up, something that still irritates him to no end. Like his younger brother, his eyes are a unique shade of gold, warmer than Jia’s, but not nearly as bright. Yao’s hair is a very dark brown, almost black when under certain amounts of light. Although he had long hair for most of his life, Yao decided to cut it short after leaving for college, sort of as an act of rebellion. He’s still getting used to it, and can often be seen attempting to fiddle with his non-existent ponytail.
Unlike his younger siblings, Yao doesn’t care much for fashion. That isn’t to say he doesn’t like nice clothes, but will take function and comfort over trends and brand names any day of the week. He usually mills about his dorm room in college sweatshirts and jogging pants, though cleans up nicely when going out on the town, or for special occasions. He prefers long sleeves over short ones (though can be seen sleeveless in warmer weather) and dresses somewhat conservatively. He’s very old fashioned in that sense.

[x] His younger siblings – Even though he tends to butt heads with them more than he’d like to admit, Yao loves both Mei and Jia with all his heart, and would do anything and everything to protect them. He’s lost touch with them after leaving the family house for college, and feels rather guilty about it.
[x] Food – Yao is a food snob, plain and simple. While he likes to sample different cuisines from all over the world, his traditional Chinese recipes are always number one in his mind.
[x] Cute things – Yao has a large collection of Hello Kitty merchandise that he’d hidden away, afraid that his parents might try to sell some of his rarer items on the internet. Almost all of his funding goes to either food, or a new plushie.
[x] Tradition – Being the eldest child in the family of five, Yao has spent a more time in China in comparison to his younger siblings, making his tastes and sensibilities rather traditional. He prefers herbal remedies over modern medicine and constantly quotes old proverbs.
[x] Martial arts – While he plays it off as just wanting more ways to exercise, Yao is very serious about his martial arts training. His reflexes are so quick that, given the opportunity, he could possibly disarm a gunman and knock him out before the other even had a chance to pull the trigger.
Dislikes
[x] His parents – Yao struggles to find anything nice to say about them; even when they were living in China, he disliked them. Their strict rules, their lack of care for their children, and their money grubbing mindset is selfish and petty at best.
[x] Disrespect – One downside to having two very headstrong younger siblings are the arguments. He feels Mei tends to irritate him more on purpose than Jia, though they both have had their fair share of annoying tendencies.
[x] The upper class – Though his parents have spent their entire lives trying to gain entrance into high society, Yao wants absolutely nothing to do with them. He finds them plastic, snooty, and altogether unbearable – the way they treat their bots is completely unacceptable as well, especially if the rumors about them are true.
[x] Anyone who messes with his younger siblings – Yao feels like he has to stand up for his brother and sister to make up for their parent’s lack of attention. He can be almost unbearably overprotective at times, but doesn’t seem to care (or notice).
[x] People bossing him around – Yao is very proud and prefers to be in control of situations rather than let anyone else lead. Anyone who tries to tell him what to do will either be turned down upfront, or face a drawn out argument every step of the way.
Strengths
[x] Intelligent – Since his parents were too busy failing at ways to earn money, Yao had to work extra hard in his studies to make sure he would get a scholarship to college. He’s riding on a full grant, and hopes to land a job where he can earn enough money to buy his siblings a home away from the Eastern Sector. He’s taken on one of the most challenging courses available at the university: medicine.
[x] Great at cooking – Cooking was one of the only things that his mother bothered to teach him, and Yao has never taken it for granted. He can take even the cheapest ingredients and turn them into something restaurant worthy. He’s tried his best to pass on his cooking skills to Mei and Jia, though he doesn’t know how successful he’s been...
Weaknesses
[x] Stubborn – Irritatingly so. Once Yao has his mind set on something, good luck convincing him to change it. Needless to say this does more harm than good; he’s very set in his ways and refuses to believe that anything he does or says is incorrect.
[x] Quick to judge – First impressions are everything to Yao, and if you make a bad one, then his opinion of you will forever be tarnished. He takes everything into account, from the way you dress, to the way to speak. Because of the above flaw, once he decides that you’re of a certain ‘type’, he’ll continue to think of you that way, despite any attempts to prove otherwise. He always tends to see things in black and white.

Personality: Yao has a very fiery personality that can easily rub others the wrong way; he’s a headstrong, no-nonsense medical student who isn’t afraid to say what’s on his mind, earning him some less than flattering nicknames from his fellow classmates. Yao’s a hardworking student who values his grades more than his free time, and can usually be found hidden behind a stack of books in either his dorm room or the university’s library. He’s proud of both his achievements and his culture, and isn’t afraid to let everyone else know.
Get on Yao’s bad side and it’s doubtful that you’ll ever leave it – he can hold grudges over the littlest things, from cutting in line to giving him the wrong order at a restaurant. He’s trying out the whole ‘second chance’ concept (suggested by Jia), but finds just disliking certain things to be easier.
While his attitude towards other people tends to be very blunt and uncensored, Yao has a soft spot for his younger siblings, and tends to coddle them more than any ‘normal’ older brother would. He tries his best to spoil them with food and toys using what little money he gets, and is always more than slightly disappointed when they shrug off his affection in embarrassment. Sometimes he wishes kids never had to grow up, and finds that things were much simpler back when he and his siblings were little. Yao tends to dwell on the way things used to be instead of how things are in the present, making him very stubborn when it comes to any sort of change.
History: Yao is the eldest of three siblings and was the only one born in Beijing. Even as a child he could tell his parents were less than attentive, always busying themselves with the Asian stock markets and business investments that led to nowhere. When they moved to Hong Kong a few years later, he was blessed with the birth of his younger sister Mei, his younger brother Jia-Long arriving a year or so after that. He lavished both with the love and attention he knew they deserved, but never received, knowing their parents weren’t going to change anytime soon. Despite their lack of affection, his mama and baba were very strict about grades – anything lower than a B would earn them a rather harsh spanking from the family’s dreaded bamboo stick. Yao studied hard to make sure he’d never have to taste its sting, though he still slipped up every once in a while.
After a series of failed business investments, the family eventually moved to Eishoff; first to the well off Northern Sector, then to the ramshackle apartments found in the Eastern Sector. Yao hated being poor, but their social status didn’t leave a dent in his studying regimen; now he needed to work extra hard in order to get his siblings out of poverty. He could care less about their parents though; as far as he was concerned, it was their own fault they were where they were. What disturbed him most about their new location were the sudden appearance of doll-like robots called ‘bots’; he heard rumors around his high school about how they were supposedly made with the poor’s sick and dying. At first he found the idea completely ludicrous, but the more he thought about it, and the more bots he saw, the more he began to get suspicious. A handful of bots he’d come across looked an awful lot like people he’d come across once or twice on the streets. The resemblance was too uncanny to be a simple coincidence.
A year before graduation high school, Yao received a full ride to Eishoff’s University, specifically within their highly touted medical program. At eighteen, he moved out of his parents’ house in the Eastern Sector and began living in the Central District. While he needed to deal with an annoying roommate for his first trimester, high grades led to a boost in his educational grant, giving him enough money to get his own room. While not exactly a loner, Yao prefers to spend his time studying, and rarely leaves the campus for reasons other than groceries. He’s currently in his final year as an undergraduate, and begins studying for his Master’s in the fall.
Eventually, he hopes to work at a hospital in one of the poorer sectors in order to discover if the rumors he’s heard about bots are really true. Yao doesn’t exactly know what he’d do if he found out the truth, but he’ll cross that bridge when he comes to it. He tries to study the mannerisms and appearance of bots from afar, too squeamish to get up to them up close – so far this technique has been fairly unsuccessful.
While he misses Mei and Jia, he has no real desire to return to the Eastern Sector anytime soon. He knows his parents will attempt to turn his grant money into some kind of failed investment, and doesn’t want to deal with the headache that will surely follow. He still keeps an eye for them when he’s out in the shopping district, always hoping he’ll run into one of them by chance. Because of the lack of cell phones in the family (as far as he knows), he’s never gotten the news about Jia’s sudden illness and consequent disappearance.
RP Sample:
Yao’s left eye had been twitching violently ever since a chatty first year decided to sit next to him in the library. People usually knew to stay clear of the pissy Chinese med student unless they wanted death glares shot at them for hours on end, but it seemed that kid never got the memo. The final straw for Yao’s unpredictable patience was when the librarian passed by, making sure people weren’t just using the library to socialize. ...Even though that’s exactly what everyone else did. The younger student promptly shut his mouth and hid behind a book about duck genitalia.
Why it was there, no one knew.
“You know the first rule in making it look like you’re pretending to study is having the book right-side up,” Yao snarled, as soon as the librarian had passed by. “Then again, I guess it would be too generous of me to assume someone from the Western Sector would know anything about things like that. All they have to do is throw their money around and boom, they get everything they want.”
Unable to deal with the suffocating stupidity, he stood up, slamming his binder on the desk and attracting the attention of everyone else in the library (except ironically, the librarian, who had returned to her desk and seemed to be totally engrossed in her Beatles soundtrack). With one last look at the offending student, Yao stormed off, making sure to shut the door with a deafening bang.
It wasn’t until he was halfway back to his dorm that he remembered he’d left his sweater back at his study desk. With a heaving sigh, he trudged back to the library to retrieve it, humiliated that his appropriately dramatic exit was now ruined with redundancy. He received stares, as expected, but shrugged them off with pride, leaving with another unnecessary door slam.
...They’d forget about it soon. Hopefully.
