Cybernetic Alterations/Enhancements:
Gilbert has cybernetic eyes in laymen's terms -- the eyes themselves are still intact, but the retinas have been replaced with cybernetic 'cameras' of sorts. These adjust accordingly with the eye's natural reaction to light and darkness, pleasure and disgust, etc. However, these do much more -- the retinas are wired into the brain and send and receive messages to react accordingly, thus enabling Gilbert to see. As an added bonus, these also read body signatures, such as heart rate and body heat.
Why?:
Gilbert was born blind, and as a boy and young man with boundless energy and dreams, this hindered him considerably. On the promise that he'd serve in the army for a whole tour of duty and continue to pay off any remaining fees afterwards in

Personality:
Loyal -- A loyal creature by nature, Gilbert will stick to people like glue. His country, family, and friends come before anything else in his life, even himself, and he'll die defending them. Gilbert's loyalty is rather hard to shake, even harder to break completely. He's a dedicated man, through and through, and it's rather obvious to old friends and family, even if he insists it's for entirely selfish or mundane reasons.
