“Mmhm,” she said with a wide smile. “I’m thinking about a scarf for you, what do you think?” Continuing to hum and swing her feet, she watched the cart rattle close before going for the mango…!
Mei made a disbelieving noise, pouting at her little brother. “Didi, no fair!” she said with a wider pout. Mango pudding was really good after all! Oh well, taro was really good as well. She could always make the mango pudding and taunt Jia with it later. The pout disappearing as the next cart rattled by, Mei tilted her head, wondering what else her brother had ordered.
As the dishes were laid down on the table, she blinked at a certain dish.
…Could it be?
Jia had remembered what her favorite dish was? Disappointment over the mango pudding disappeared in an instant as she clapped her hands happily, nodding rapidly. “Ah you remembered~! Thank you!” she cheered happily, taking out her chopsticks and taking a bite. Mm~! “Do you want any?”

Jia refused to remove the spoon from his mouth, savouring the mango goodness as he listened to Mei’s pitch for a scarf. Reluctantly, he removed the fruity sweetness from his tongue to offer an intelligible answer.
“Let’s focus on the essentials first, I guess,” he replied, though he thought he’d look damn good in one. “Like, shirts and jackets and junk. I’m sure we’ll have enough for some accessories though...and don’t let me forget to buy you that pin, okay?”
He returned to his pudding hungrily, trying his best not to devour the entire thing in one bite. Mei’s reaction to the sea cucumber was...unexpected. She really did like it? He was expecting her to hate it...it tasted like warm rubber (in his opinion anyway) and it looked...urgh. She did know they pooped out of their mouths, right?
“Of course I remembered,” Jia lied, raising a strong eyebrow. “It’s my job to remember everything you do so I can either use it to make you happy or annoy the living daylights out of you.”
Because that’s what little brothers did. However, his smirk wavered when Mei held out a piece for him to try, and Jia instinctively scooted away from it, flashbacks of his first taste immediately assaulting his taste buds.
“N-No…that’s okay...it’s all yours...”

Well, in all honesty, the dish wasn’t her favorite favorite, but it was up there! Taking up her spoon, she managed to scoop a little of the pudding away from Jia before he devoured it all, and smiled at her triumph. “Well,” she said, spoon still in mouth, her hand resting against her chin. “Accessories are important you know!”
Waving the spoon, she took a bite out of the taro pudding. “If you get a jacket, depending on if it has a collar or not then the right accessory will make the outfit perfect!” Just like if she actually had the right pin to go with her clothes…Ignoring that thought, she smiled at Jia. “Leave it to me Didi, I’ll make sure that you’re the prettiest boy going back to school!”
Well. At least the cutest. Probably prettiest boy wouldn’t be much of a compliment for him. Oh well!
Mei began to laugh as Jia spoke of his job as her little brother. “Well you wouldn’t be a little brother if you didn’t do all of those things you know,” she replied before holding out the sea cucumber towards him. “It tastes good Didi~ Have some!”
Revenge for the mango pudding indeed~

With the order completed, a third server calculated how much their indulgent meal had cost them, circling the total amount and leaving the tab on the table. Jia turned it over and nudged it over to Mei, hoping she’d have enough to cover it. Not knowing how much it cost would help him sleep better that night – guilt didn’t really suit him too well.
“I know,” he said with a muffled sigh, not bothering to protest as Mei took a piece of his pudding. Jia wasn’t really big on having too many accessories, preferring his favourite magnet bracelet over anything too...standoffish. Really, the sort of guys who wore scarves, hats, gloves, and stuff to school were a bit eccentric, to say the least.
“Pretty?” he repeated, giving her a blank look. “I don’t wanna look pretty – I wanna look cool, y’know? Or at least, not like I’m from the Eastern Sector.”
Jia shrank away from the jiggling mass and tried to hide behind a napkin, making a face at the sea creature’s unappetizing texture. How Mei could eat that thing without a second thought was, frankly, amazing – then again, there was probably some vague Chinese myth about the collagen in it being good for your skin or something. Honestly? Jia would rather stick to using moisturizer and pimple cream.
“Shrimp balls?” he said instead, pushing the plate across the table. “Siu mai? There’s a whole table of food that doesn’t look like green slime jiejie; take your pick.”

She glanced at the price on their meal then smiled. It wasn't as bad as she thought it would be! There would still be enough for going around and shopping for sure~ She would just be clever and haggle her way to a cheaper price. Humming happily, she set down the dish of sea cucumbers and continued to snack on her pudding.
"Well you don't have to be pretty, I just want you to look cool!" she replied with a grin, nodding. "Trust me, I won't go too overboard!"
Hopefully.
"We'll go all over the markets today to find you the perfect outfits for you!" she continued on, taking the shrimp ball that was offered up to her.
"Xie Xie Didi~" she hummed softly. "And Sea cucumbers are good for you too. Can't be too picky about what you eat after all." After all, one couldn't be too sure where their next meal might come from!

Mei hadn’t turned a lucky shade of red after looking at their tab, so hopefully their lunch hadn’t cost them more than expected. Jia resisted the urge to order just one more thing, not wanting to cut into their clothing funds for something bought on a whim. He finished off the cheng fun and poked off a hunk of the red bean pudding, picking out the chunks of beans and only eating the jelly-like pieces.
“Just as long as you don’t try to put guyliner on me, we’ll be great,” Jia blinked, unable to imagine why any self respecting male would want to make themselves look like a raccoon.
“And I can be picky if I want,” he insisted, taking a sip of his tea. “Like, what’s the point of eating if you can’t enjoy it, right? Totally pointless.”

Well, even if the bill had been a lot of money, she still would have paid! It was a special lunch for the two of them after all. Pouting when her brother started to pick out the red beans, they were the best part after all, Mei began on some of the dumplings sitting to the side. Chopsticks clicking for a moment, Mei blinked before laughing, sipping some tea.
"Guyliner? I know some guys who wear it, but I wouldn't make you try it," she teased, shaking her head. "Besides, it wouldn't suit you...I think. Unless you want to try it on? Just to see how it looks?"
She was joking of course, seeing as Jia did not want the makeup near his person. If he didn't want it, then she wouldn't push it. ...At least too far.
Making a small pile out of the red beans that Jia picked out, Mei pouted. "But if you're picky about the wrong things, then you might become as skinny as a stick!" she fussed. "And then you'll disappear! I don't want my brother to disappear. So eat everything, okay?"

“Ew, no way,” Jia said, sticking out his tongue. “Like, how girls even manage to put it on without poking out an eye still totally amazes me.”
Continuing with his odd pattern of sweet-salty-sweet, the Chinese teen slid over a small plate of fried shrimp balls, skewered with a stick sugar cane. He never really understood the point of using a sugar cane though – it didn’t really impart any flavour to the shrimp. Shrugging, Jia split the ball into two halves with his chopsticks before taking one and dunking it into a generous amount of soy sauce.
Mmm. Fried.
“Trust me jiejie; with the way I’m eating, you won’t see me becoming a stick anytime soon,” he nodded reassuringly, moving to eat the other half. “Or like, disappear or whatever.”
Jia polished off the rest of the plate along with an order of siu mai to prove his point; afterwards, he sat back in his chair with a happy sigh. Realistically, he could have probably managed another plate or two, but hated walking around town on an overstuffed stomach; it made him feel like a sausage. Jia sat up and took a few sips of tea to wash down the grease, pouring himself another cup and refilling his sister’s.
“I never thought I’d say this, but I’m like, really happy to finally drink something that isn’t friggin’ milk tea,” he confessed, bringing the cup to his lips. “Mama and baba keep making it for me. I mean, I know it’s nice of them and stuff, but it’s kinda late for them try to make me like them, you know?”

"It just takes practice Jia, lots and lots of practice," Mei said, pretending to stroke her chin like she had a long beard. "And skill too! Even if you had a lot of practice, you can still stab out your eye!"
Okay, she was being a little dramatic, but make up was a skill! ...Somewhat. Taking the other half of the fried shrimp ball, she managed to place the entire half of the ball inside her mouth, grinning a little. No need to be dainty about good food! Well, most of the time anyway.
Waving her chopsticks at her brother, Mei pouted. "Well, I'm your big sister! I'll watch out for you anyway," she proclaimed with a grin on her face.
Nodding her head in thanks when her brother refilled her cup, Mei tilted her head, drinking a little of the tea. "That is a little strange..." she mused, swirling the tea in her cup slowly. "They don't usually spoil any of us..." She smiled a little before refilling her brother's cup. "I'm sure they're just trying to be a little nicer Didi."
I'M SO SORRY JIN ;A;

“But I like my eyes,” Jia said, covering them dramatically. “...I have special eyes.”
He quickly cut the act and began poking at the fried crumbs left on his plate, taking a moment to stretch a bit before they continued with their after school stroll around town. Pulling up his legs to sit fully on the chair, Jia drank a mouthful of tea to clear out all the wonderful grease and bounced a bit.
“I guess you’re right; I’m probably just being paranoid or something. Anyway, are you ready to go? We’ve got a few more hours before it gets too dark. I don’t wanna walk back home after the sun goes down, yknow?”
Part of his reason was because he was afraid of the dark (a secret only a handful of people knew, and one he would always deny), the other was because Jia knew how dangerous their area could be after dark. He hadn't brought anything too heavy to use as a weapon either, except his history textbook.
...Perhaps he could bore the attacker to death.

Mei giggled softly at that, poking her brother in the arm. "You never know~" she teased lightly. "One of these days I'll have to try some of my makeup on you."
No, she wouldn't since she didn't want to traumatize her brother, but hell, it was still fun to tease him, most of the time.
Taking another drink of her tea, she smiled a little, eventually draining the entire cup. "Maybe they finally realized how good a son you are to them!" she offered up, although she thought to herself that this probably wasn't true, and the only one her parents actually doted on was their older brother.
"Anyways Jia, I think you're being a little too paranoid. They're our parents after all, even if they suck at being them." Placing down a small sum of money for the waiter who whisked it away to ring up, she smiled brightly. "Yes! Let's go shopping! I promise I won't get you anything too girly okay?"

Jia nodded and gathered his things, confident that his meal was already beginning to digest. After the waiter had come by with their receipt, he muttered a quiet thank you and watched him walk back into the kitchen; hopefully he wasn’t too miffed about the tip (or lack thereof), but whatever. Jia took one last sip of tea before setting his empty cup down and standing up, slinging his heavy book bag over his shoulder.
“Work hasn’t let out yet, so the streets shouldn’t be too busy,” he said, leading his sister out of the restaurant. “So no worries about getting run over.”
Squinting slightly as the bright sunlight hit his eyes, Jia looked around the area, trying to determine which direction they were supposed to head. He remembered that there weren’t any interesting stores on the way from school, so logically, they would all be in the same direction they were heading in the first place. A small smile found its way onto his lips as he glanced back, making sure Mei was still following him.
“I’ll race you to the crosswalk~ Loser has to buy the winner whatever they want!”
And with his stomach full of a mix of fried food, Jia took off, hoping he wouldn't regret this decision later.

Mei smiled cheerfully as she took up her own bag, the remnants of the meal lingering on her tongue. Maybe if she had some money, they could get some sweets! Or boba! That was always nice. Waiting for her brother, she smiled at him.
"Well I'm sure we're not going to get run over regardless!" she paused as a car zoomed right past her. "Though yeah, I think it's a good thing to be careful." Making a face, she continued to walk through the streets with her brother.
...Of course until he started to race her.
All of the good shops were in the direction he was running but, but still! She couldn't run in these shoes and skirt!
"A-Ah, hey! No fair you got a head start!" she called after him, flailing and trying to run after him. "And I'm already buying you stuff!"

“Yeah, but now you’re gonna have to buy me even more stuff!” he called back, ducking past a number of surprised shoppers.
His decision to run nearly a block immediately after eating a rather large meal caught up to him quickly, as halfway to the crosswalk, he felt a familiar pang of pain in his stomach. He glanced behind , making sure Mei was still far behind, before taking a quick break against a nearby building to wait out his stomach cramps massaging the area in hopes of making them go away faster. Of course they would choose to pop up when clothes were on the line; life liked to spite him like that.
